Completion Equipment for Oil and Gas – An Overview

Completion Equipment for Oil and Gas – An Overview

Completion equipment can be considered the equipment that is mainly used by the professionals for bringing an oil well to the state of completion. The purpose behind this action is to test the production of the well and then to start commercial production from it. So, the equipment used for the production of gas and oil is known as completion equipment.

Such equipment can also be used for optimizing the production of hydrocarbons from the well. They are helpful in completing the production of oil and gas by following useful methods and techniques using advanced tools. Today, the tools being used for this purpose are technology-based and advanced to provide better services.

Function

The major function of completion equipment is to bring out an oil well or gas well to its completion state. The equipment that is handy during the process of well completion is the one that comprises a collection of downhole tubular equipment and tools. These tools are helpful to make gas and oil well effectively and safely with the production of hydrocarbons.

No doubt, all the wells have their own set of completion standards. These standards are majorly based on location geology. So, you should know that the completion process greatly depends upon the type of well as well as its design. All the equipment, large or small, used in completing a gas and oil well are included in the completion equipment category.

Well Completion

Well completion is a process for which the completion equipment is used. It is a process of well lifecycle between production and drilling. In this process, a cased and drilled well is prepared for production. No doubt, well completion is an important, expensive, and complex task for the wells.

The major goal of this process is to stimulate the gas or oil well for maximizing the production as well as running tubing for enhancing the lifespan of the well. It also aims to maintain the wells efficiently and for a long time.

Process of Well Completion

The process of well completion has been mentioned below:

Preparation

First, you need to prepare the well through the process of drilling. In this step, you need to assemble different elements of frac such as data van, chemicals, pumps, blenders, fluids, sand, etc. You also need to clean the well using water and acid.

Stimulation

This process is also known as hydraulic fracturing where the well is perforated at a time. It involves pumping down a perforation gun for creating the holes in the casing so that an interface could be created with the surrounding rock.

Drill Out

In this stage, you need to remove the materials that isolate stages during the process of frac. It is preferred to use the method of coiled tubing drill-out.

Flowback

This step involves bringing the gas or oil well to production. It may also involve soaking or shutting the well.

Examples of Completion Equipment

The completion equipment or tools are used for saving your time and energy. These tools have been available according to your needs and requirements. You must know the right source from where you can buy quality completion tools.

Some of the common completion products include liner running and service tools, liner cementing, liner accessories, liner hanger packers, MaxTrace monitoring tools, liner hangers, plug-and-perf systems, etc.

Failure of Completion Equipment

The completion equipment might fail if they are poorly designed. You may use the wrong equipment or the right completion equipment gets damaged during the process of installation or repair. Other reasons behind the failure of completion equipment are fatigue, erosion, and corrosion.

There is some equipment that is considered well barriers. The failure of such equipment can result in secondary or primary well barrier envelopes. So, they must be replaced or repaired according to the need and condition.

Conclusion

Completion equipment plays a vital role in the production of oil and gas wells. Several technological-based tools are also used for this purpose. The well completion process can only be performed by professionals efficiently.
